TechnoMotive EPROM Modification
Frequently Asked Questions

I only want the Stutterbox Mod and the Rev-limter mod (or some other combination of mods with many deleted). Can I get a special price on that?

Sorry, no. While we are flexible in the types of combinations of modifictions you can pick and choose, our pricing structure is based on the highest stage an item is picked from. In the case mentioned in the question, the Stutterbox Mod comes from Stage III, so that means $300.

How do I tell if my 1997-1999 ECU has an EPROM?

Sorry, you are out of luck. As of 1997, Mitsubishi started making all the ECUs "FLASH" reprogrammable. This means they supposedly can be reprogrammed with a special tool by the dealer. We haven't cracked this reprogramming as of yet.

I don't have an ECU with an EPROM. What are my options?

Your best chance is to look for an EPROM ECU at a junkyard. Failing that, you can contact the people at Master Tech (phone: 888-ECM-TOGO). Check our instructions for ECU compatibility and EPROM ECU part numbers.

Which ECUs from what models and model years can I use with my car?

If you have a turbo car, you must use an ECU from another turbo car. There is knock sensor circuitry in the turbo ECUs that is missing from the non-turbo ECUs. 1990 cars must stick to using 1990 ECUs. The factory swapped two pins on the ECU and changed the filtering in the tachometer in 1991. 1991-1994 cars may use ECUs from 1991-1994 cars. 1995-1996 cars may use 1995-1996 ECUs. 1997-1999 cars may use 1997-1999 ECUs.

Please be aware that it is not always a simple swap. There are some slight differences between FWD and AWD gearing which results in small changes in the ECU code. Also, there are EGR differences between 1990 and 1993 (in 1994, all cars have the same EGR system). Finally, the injector sizes for automatics is different from manual cars, among other things. However, if you send the ECU to us for modifications, we can change the base code to match your car, so long as the year range and turbo status are matched as mentioned above.

I can't find an EPROM ECU anywhere. Is your daughterboard ready yet?

No. (A daughterboard is a small board that would go in place of the microprocessor, allowing it to use an external EPROM instead of its internal program.) We did get a prototype working. We are working on bringing it to production. Details will of course be released on this site as soon as they become available.

I am going to socket the EPROM in my ECU myself. Can I get a discount for that?

Sorry, no. The way the pricing structure works, we do the socketing "for free" when modifications are ordered. We do this intentionally to encourage people to send in their ECU. Socketing the ECU can be trickier than it sounds unless you really do have experience desoldering boards with a professional solder sucker. We've had to fix boards for people who thought it was an easy thing to do. We do have instructions elsewhere on the site if you insist.

What is the turnaround time for an ECU mod?

If you would like a fast turnaround time and are willing to pay for overnight shipping, we can do the following. Send the ECU to us on Monday using overnight shipping so that we get it Tuesday. We will do the modification Tuesday night and then send the ECU back to you Wednesday overnight. You will get the ECU back Thursday afternoon. Aside from the shipping, we do not charge extra for this service. You must arrange this with us ahead of time, however, so we can arrange to do your ECU Tuesday night.

If the above arrangements are not made, we could take up to one week to finish your ECU.
